Buddha Symbolism

The lotus flower symbolizes the Buddha, purity and enlightenment because it rises clean and untainted out of muddy waters. Candlelight symbolizes wisdom, a light through which we understand truth. The Buddha's serene appearance reminds us that we each have the capacity to purify the mind, develop infinite compassion and perfect understanding through meditation.

It occurred to me today...

Today, as I pondered some of my recent actions...it occurred to me that if I were like a biblical character...I would be most like Jonah!!! Why? Because he ran away and tried to hide when he was being called to action! According to the Bible story I heard as a child...Jonah refused God's call...ran away to Tarshish...was thrown overboard by his shipmates during a violent storm...wrapped in seaweed he was swallowed by a whale and sat there in the dark begging God for forgiveness. The story doesn't just end with the whale spitting Jonah out...whole and unscathed...no -Jonah goes on to get into more trouble by running from his supposed "Callings"!

That'd be me...I run away from everything....according to Joseph Campbell...the symbolism in this bible story is that man is dying to his own infantile ego...but I really don't know what it means or if it's a true story or not. I just know that I do identify with Jonah. I can't hear the voice I'm supposed to hear because my own pessimistic "Eeyoreism" is clouding my mind!
So the million dollar question for today is....What questions should I be asking?
