A Simple Spiritual not religious Meditation

"Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out." ~ Anonymous

The above "saying" is the 11th Step of 12 Step Programs. Twelve step programs are not religious but rather they are spiritual in nature. The intent of this step is to help those recovering (from alcoholism, addictions, family dysfunctions, etc.)develop a spiritual awareness. This step is worded in such a way to be totally inclusive with any ones belief system - "God as we understood Him". Those working a 12 Step program work the steps in order - meaning , there are 10 Steps before this one that direct and guide them in their relationships with others. The 11th Step is how a recovering person truly begins to develop a relationship with the God of their understanding.

As it has often been said, prayer is talking to the God and meditation is listening. Meditation practices are a way to find the voice of God within. How do we listen? Simply said, you sit still and be quiet...but for most of us that is not an easy task. It requires practice, patience, dedication and desire. One has to practice letting go in order to recover from the insanity in one's own mind. How do you let go? By acceptance of the present moment found through daily prayer and meditation.

How does one meditate? Find a safe place where you can sit comfortably for about 10 minutes. Set a timer for 10 minutes and practice at least 3 times a week for 30 days. Have a notebook handy to take notes of the prominent thoughts whether postive or negative -to be noted after you meditate not during. If you do not remember the thoughts - don't worry - you're right where you're supposed to be with your awareness. Close your eyes and open your mind. Relax your body and relax your mind. Breathe in and out of your nostrils several relaxing breaths. Mentally say to your self..."relax". Place your awareness on the breath as it flows in and out of your nostrils. Naturally your mind will wander - be aware of your thoughts but do not follow them. They will ebb and flow along with your breath. Have a clear intention of becoming aware of your breath in the present moment.
