In disorders that have an emotional and psychological origin meditation has shown to be effective. Meditation can have a beneficial influence on emotional balance, and can promote healing in cases where disease is aggravated by emotional imbalance. Meditation has been shown to decrease heart rate, breathing rate, metabolism and blood lactate level. It has also been studied, by Dr. Benson at Harvard, that meditation can increase alpha brain waves.
Meditation has also shown that Meditators live longer and suffer fewer digenerative diseases. Pain can be suffering in the physcial body or suffering in the mind. Bodily suffering and mental suffering are connected. Suffering is said to be caused by resisting the original insult. You do not have to go far to find suffering in your life. The pain or suffering can become your teacher!
"Relax and it won't hurt so much." And old folk adage that holds much wisdom. With a regular meditation practice you are likely to be much more skillful at relaxing when you need to deal with or release this pain!
