Meditation attempts to transcend the kind of thinking where you identify your thoughts or where you are lost in thought. The practice of meditation gives you the ability to observe your thoughts. Without the awareness developed in meditation, the subject of your thoughts usually dominates your attention and distracts you from moment to moment mental state. Through meditation you become detached from the thoughts and emotions and reside in a different state of "observer" consciousness. Observing thoughts and developing skills of allowing thoughts to subside at will. This process is extremely restorative!
