JOSEPH CAMPBELL: If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are -- if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.
Years ago I stumbled upon Joseph Campbell and his wonderful awe inspiring work on comparative mythology. He often used the phrase "follow your bliss". Bliss can be a state of profound spiritual satisfaction, happiness and joy, often associated with religious ideas of the afterlife. As many of the followers of Mr. Campbell have done, I misinterpreted bliss to mean some form of hedonistic behavior. Wow - leave it to someone with a disease of perception to go down that path!
This morning as I meditated I got a faint glimpse of bliss. It was not about an external pleasure seeking endeavor. The state of bliss I experienced was a stillness. A single rain drop falling from the sky and landing in the middle of a river. The perfect moment. No past, no future - just here and now. I breathed deeply and it was pure bliss! All from just being still!
Peace and Grace
