Zen Master Dogen describes meditation: "just sitting"
When beginning meditation it is suggested that one shouldn't have a definitive goal in mind. By suggesting that we know where meditation will lead we create fixed concepts about it, which can obscure the actual experience. The best approach is one of a relaxed "not knowing" and total open-mindedness. In this sense meditation is a path without end. The expectations that attract us to meditation are "normal" but once we begin our practice these should be put aside as the meditative experience is complete within itself.
Some have referred to meditation as a journey into vastness or bliss. Zen Master Dogen describes meditation as "just sitting". This refers to a total mindfulness of the practice of meditating. There are no expectations, no disappointments and no impatience in this place!
peace and blessings...
