I've got peace like river in the valley of my soul. It's available to us all! To achieven this change in consciousness requires me to meditate for a minimum of 11 minutes. When I first began meditation on a daily basis, I struggled. To sit still was almost impossible once I acquired that ability it was difficult to still my mind so I took baby steps! I began to practice sitting for 3 minutes after several weeks I increased my time to 7 minutes, then 9 minutes and eventually made it to 11 minutes. One day, quite some time ago, I was sitting in meditation and heard in my minds eye, "Peace Like A River"! Immediately following that tune I felt peaceful. It began to happen with more and more frequency...after a certain time of meditating I'd hear "Peace Like A River" and I'd feel peaceful. So one day, I looked at my watch, and I'd been meditating 11 minutes. Of course, I did not automatically assume that hearing this tune was associated with anything other than a sensory recall of some sort, until over time I checked my watch when I heard the tune and found out that it happened 11 minutes into my meditative journey. What a fabulous feeling - "peace like a river."
Today, I did not awaken early enough to fulfill my need to meditate before dawn. But I did sit down mid-morning and meditate and it happened...11 minutes into my meditation I heard, "peace like a river." I peaked at my watch and I'd been meditating 11 minutes and 9 seconds.
In Kundalini Yoga in particular there are varies level of consciousness changes depending on the rising of the Kundalini Energy. The increments are basically 3, 7, 9, 11, 31 and higher. Other meditation practices suggest 10 to 20 minutes. A group of scientist from Harvard studied a school of Mayhayana Monks in Tibet and found that not only were there brain waves changes during meditation...the waves became synchronized with the breath and changes occured in skin temperature. Unfortunately there have been no scientific tests to validate the spiritual aspect of meditation. Breath is the channel between the conscious and unconsious. To be mindful of that breath (spirit) is truly an awakening...if only for a moment. A moment that can be freely recalled at any point in a given day.
Today, I am grateful to have peace like a river in the valley of my soul!
