Gaia

“Though earth is one, the plants vary depending on the seeds sown. The womb of mother symbolizes mother earth. As is the seed of thought sown in it, so is the fruit it yields.” Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Gaia principle is one of the most interesting and revealing theory about our relation with our big home - this planet earth. Propounded by James Lovelock - a great scientific thinker of our time, this theory, if analyze in right perspective, has the potential to completely change the way we look at world around us.

This set of principles holds that all organisms on an extraterrestrial life-giving planet regulate the biosphere (the global sum of all ecosystems) to the benefit of the whole. Gaia concept draws a connection between the survivability of a species (hence its evolutionary course) and its usefulness to the survival of other species.

There were a number of precursors to Gaia principle, but the first scientific form of this idea was proposed as the Gaia hypothesis by James Lovelock, is an independent scientist, environmentalist and futurologist who lives in Devon, England. The Gaia hypothesis deals with the concept of homeostasis (the property of a system, either open or closed, that regulates its internal environment and tends to maintain a stable, constant condition), and claims the resident life forms of a host planet coupled with their environment have acted and act as a single, self-regulating system. This system includes the near-surface rocks, the soil, and the atmosphere.
